A few years ago the Faculty of Economics in Osijek celebrated two important events: the 45th anniversary of its successful work and the first year of the implementation of new programmes in accordance with the provisions of the Bologna Agreement. This crucial point in our activities coincided with our moving into new, superior premises, which created ideal conditions for an even more successful institution. New generations of students are now being offered a first-rate higher education that can meet the needs and requirements of the workplace at the beginning of the third millennium.
The new premises (1,600 m2) include nine new lecture halls, 14 new offices and hallways, and are furnished with the most modern teaching equipment. The library alone is equipped with a rich and varied collection of books and journals. The reading room holds the information centre for Internet access to all relevant world data bases, with more than a hundred computer stations, as well as wireless Internet access throughout. Additionally, special lecture halls for graduate programmes, and a digital, Internet-based student service is provided. All of this guarantees that our staff (of 80, plus 20 adjunct faculty) and over 5,000 students can work together to meet the modern requirements of our profession and use the most recent methods to turn theory into reality.Â
This Faculty has played an important role in training scholars and professionals in this region of Croatia. We have had a total of 15.047 graduates, 642 students gained Masters degrees, and 118 have been awarded PhDs. The Faculty wishes to establish itself as an autonomous, modern, comparatively competitive institution of higher education, aiming for European and world standards in both teaching and research. This is mirrored in dynamic improvements between international and local co-operation, with increased student participation.
The facts are that the Faculty of Economics in Osijek was founded almost 50 years ago, as one of the first institutions of higher education in the town and the region. That it was one of the building blocks for establishing J.J. Strossmayer University in Osijek clearly indicates that the rich tradition and the present intellectual potential of the Faculty will be strong impetuses for the development of the economy both in the region and indeed Croatia.Â
